When does a switchboard need to be upgraded?
A switchboard should be reviewed if it has ceramic or rewireable fuses, no safety switches (RCDs) on power and lighting circuits, signs of heat damage — scorching, discolouration or a hot smell at the board — frequent tripping under normal load, or if you are adding a major appliance like an EV charger, ducted air conditioner or induction cooktop. Most pre-1990 homes in Logan and Brisbane south have at least one of these issues. When significant electrical work is carried out, Queensland regulations require the existing board to be brought up to current standards as part of the job.
How long does a switchboard upgrade take?
Most residential switchboard upgrades are completed in a single day. Power is off for part of the day during the changeover — typically three to five hours depending on the size and complexity of the board. We schedule the work to minimise disruption and confirm the power-off window with you before we start. Where the job involves a larger home, a sub-board, or concurrent circuit work, we confirm the timeframe upfront. You will have power restored and the board tested before we leave.
Do I need a switchboard upgrade before installing an EV charger?
Often yes. A home EV charger typically requires a dedicated 32-amp circuit on its own RCD-protected breaker. Many older boards in Logan and Brisbane south do not have spare capacity, adequate supply rating, or the correct protection to support this circuit safely. We always assess the existing board before quoting an EV charger installation — if an upgrade is required we say so upfront with a clear fixed price. If the board is adequate as-is, we tell you that too.
What is involved in replacing an asbestos-backed switchboard?
Asbestos-backed switchboards were installed in many Queensland homes built between the 1950s and the mid-1980s. The asbestos is typically in the backing board behind the fuse carriers and must be handled and disposed of under safe work procedures. We have experience with asbestos-backed board removal — the work is scoped correctly, the material is disposed of with proper documentation, and the replacement board is installed to current standards. If you are not sure whether your board contains asbestos, the style and age of the board is usually a reliable indicator and we can confirm on inspection.
What does a switchboard upgrade include?
A complete switchboard upgrade includes a new correctly-rated enclosure, main switch, individual circuit breakers for every circuit, RCD (safety switch) protection on all power and lighting circuits, properly terminated and labelled wiring inside the board, a full load test before completion, and a compliance certificate. We document every circuit with a clear label — so the board is readable and accurate, not a guessing game the next time a circuit needs to be isolated. Old switchboard components are removed from site.
Can I do my own switchboard work in Queensland?
No. Switchboard work of any kind — including replacing fuses, adding breakers, or any modification inside the board — is prescribed electrical work under Queensland's Electrical Safety Act and must be carried out by a licensed electrician. Unlicensed electrical work in Queensland is illegal, voids home insurance, and can result in significant fines. It also means the work has never been tested or certified — which becomes a serious problem at the point of sale or after any incident.
How much does a switchboard upgrade cost in Brisbane and Logan?
Switchboard upgrade costs vary depending on the number of circuits, the existing board condition, whether asbestos removal is involved, the location and accessibility of the board, and whether concurrent work such as sub-boards or supply upgrades is being done at the same time. We do not publish fixed prices because a quote based on what we can see remotely is not reliable — a board that looks straightforward on the outside can have wiring issues that only become visible on inspection. We provide a fixed price after seeing the board, either in person or from a clear photo, before any work begins.
